The Buffalo Jazz Collective’s education program offers opportunities for students from all backgrounds to learn, listen, perform, and appreciate jazz music in a safe and fun environment. The BJC firmly believes that music has the power to change lives and establish long-lasting life skills.

Our educational initiatives include developing our students’ abilities to:

  1. Interpret different styles of jazz;

  2. Cultivate performance techniques essential to performing within a jazz ensemble;

  3. Enhance improvisational skills, particularly through discussions of melody, harmony, and form; and,

  4. Reinforce common musical concepts and further developing aural skills.

Students in the All-City Jazz Ensemble, the Northtowns Youth Jazz Orchestra, and the Southtowns Youth Jazz Orchestra rehearse weekly with professional musicians from the Buffalo Jazz Collective. In all ensembles, students benefit from various performance opportunities, guest artist masterclasses, tickets to BJC concerts, scholarships, and more.

Thanks to the generous support of the Sportsmens Americana Music Foundation, we have been able to gift various scholarships and instruments for All City Jazz seniors planning to attend college for music in the fall over the past three years.
